The Iron preparation. Iron for anemia and iron toxicity

The Iron preparation:
The treatment of iron deficiency anemia consists of administration of oral or parental iron preparation
     
      1. Oral preparation :

Since ferrous iron is most efficiently absorbed only ferrous salts should be used.

Ex:
*Ferrous sulphate
*Ferrous gluconate
*Ferrous fume rate
*Ferrous surname are the most commonly used oral Preparation

2. Parenteral preparation:
When oral iron therapy fails parenteral iron administration may be an effective alternative.
Example: Iron dextrin.

 Iron for anemia :

1. Indications for the use:
Iron is used for prophylaxis or treatment of iron deficiency disease

2. Prophylacting of use:
*In pregnancy iron should be given from 4th month of pregnancy and this should be contined during the lactation
*Infancy and childhood
*Premature body.
*In menstruating woman
*Professional blood donor.

3. Therapeutic use:
Iron deficiency anemia due to acute or chronic loss of blood.
*Malabsorption syndrome
*Anemia is pregnancy
*In megaloblastic anemia

Iron toxicity:
Toxicity of therapy is two types-

1. Acute iron toxicity,   2.Chronic iron toxicity

1. Acute iron toxicity:
Large amount of oral iron cause nausea vomiting abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea flowed by shock lethargy and dispread.

2. Chronic iron toxicity:
Chronic iron toxicity results when iron is deposited in the heart liver pancreas and other organs. It can lead to organ fathered and death.
